It is the one thing that no bride wants to hear on their wedding day – the forecast calls for rain. All sorts of things probably run through her head, and the temptation to worry becomes all too tantalizing. We know differently – that a little rain is easy to work around, and without rain, you don’t need to have pretty parasols, or the potential for rainbows. While we didn’t get a rainbow at the fabulous wedding of Sarah & Todd at the beautiful and historic Burr Homestead, we all got to witness the joining of two soul mates, and all of the revelry of their friends and families there to partake in an amazing day. The rain was there, to be sure, and it gave the gardens, trees and hedges surrounding the mansion an unbelievably beautiful sheen that framed Sarah and Todd perfectly. They were willing to get a little wet, we were willing to get a little dirty, and the pictures only show the sort of thing that make the previous two points obsolete when Sarah & Todd look at them on their 50th wedding anniversary. That on their wedding day they were so much in love with each other, and their day couldn’t have been any more perfect just how it was.

When I was a kid, my sister and I would look forward to spending time with my Baba (Yugoslavian for grandmother) and grandpa “Brownie” (his nickname for most of his adult life), and especially going out to eat with them at a diner in Oakland California named Biff’s. It was always exciting reading over the menu and being able to order anything we wanted (and for me it was usually breakfast for dinner, a choice I still haven’t grown out of), and hearing my grandmother say the same thing about my grandfather every time he ordered a hamburger – “he likes his burgers still mooing!” & “every time he takes his first bite all the stuff falls out the back!”. These are some of my fondest memories of my childhood, and there is always something comforting about pulling into any number of the many diners in New England and having nostalgia tug at the old heart strings. It is very much the same for Vicki, and as it turns out, also the same for Ryan, as we got to talking about the fond memories we develop as we travel through life’s important moments.

We had the opportunity to drive up to Hartford to meet up with Stephanie and Ryan at the campus where they met (the University of Hartford), and get a guided tour down memory lane while stopping for photographs and talking about our shared experiences. Stephanie and Ryan were quick to point out all of the spots that had shared meaning for them, and noticed that while some things had changed since they went to school there, it was still great to be back. And we know that being there definitely had a positive effect as the two of them look absolutely radiant together, and it carried on throughout the whole shoot. As a rule for us, it is so important to connect to and enjoy the people we photograph – we don’t think our jobs would be possible if we didn’t truly love everyone who invests in their images with us. And all of our couples bring us so many wonderfully unique qualities and details that it keeps us on our toes and totally interested in every event we are a part of. Abby & Scott had such a day, the day they vowed to spend the rest of their lives together growing as a couple, and sharing themselves, not just to each other, but with those around them. And their vows aren’t unlike what they gave to us, their friends and their families – a vision totally unique to them, and filled with all of the beautiful details that represent just how sweet and thoughtful they both are. We simply adored Abby’s Michelle Roth wedding gown which she purchased from Kleinfeld, and her Badgley Mischka silver glitter pumps. And of course all of the amazing flowers and other treats like Abby’s handmade moss “A” & “S”, and the apples that cradled the place cards for their guests. It was a spiritual, emotional day, both elegant and timeless, and it showcased all of the best things life has to offer.
