Having traveled all over the East Coast for photo shoots we know lots of great locations for engagement sessions, and often will help our couples narrow things down a bit if they can’t decide or are looking for something specific. Other times however, our couples know exactly what they want, and already have a spectacular location in mind. Such was the case with Mandie + Anthony, and our afternoon with them in and around the Guilford neighborhood where Anthony grew up. We had an easy time imagining how special it must have been for Anthony to spend his early years there, and we can see why they chose it for their photos. Beautiful beaches surrounded by green wetlands, stone walls bordering the roads that wound through the surrounding hills, all bathed in a warmly glowing light that had us excited every step of the way. We hope they had as much fun as we did visiting such a special place in their lives, and can’t wait to capture the new memories on their wedding day!

Even though Vicki and I have taken pictures of other couples on the Brooklyn Bridge prior to Deepa & Shiv’s engagement session, it still never fails to inspire awe in us – not only for its majestically sweeping structure, but also for the sheer volume of people that walk its span daily. There are very short windows of opportunity to catch the moments when only our couple is in the frame, and when we aren’t fighting to stay out of the bicycle lane and endure the scorn of a commuter that has to deal with interlopers in his path on a daily basis.

But rather than be a hassle, all of this commotion adds to the charm of the experience (and you have to have a tough skin in and around NYC in general), as well as our inspiration. It was no different with Deepa and Shiv, and we had a wonderful time getting to know them better and explaining our tips for mentally blocking out gawking tourists. And all of this while we were snapping photos of them, with people taking pictures of us taking pictures, and bicyclists yelling at us for accidentally getting in their lane. Ya gotta love the Big Apple and it’s boroughs .

Vicki and I often get asked “So do you guys only shoot weddings?”. Our answer is that while weddings are our primary focus, and truly do keep us more than busy (a quick estimate of 40,000 delivered wedding photos per year), we enjoy all types of photography . One great thing about what we do is being able to chronicle the various stages in our couples lives through photography. People come to us as clients, and we end up being friends because of these shared experiences. Case in point, Amaris and Brendan who hired us to photograph their engagement, wedding, “wear it again“, and recently, family session. It gets us all misty to look back over four years ago and see where we started with them, all the way up to now with the newest addition to their family, Manny (who couldn’t be any more adorable and truly is the best of both his parents). It’s a great feeling to do what you love for your livelihood, all while getting to know great people better, and watching them thrive!
