When we heard the news that our good friends Robert and Kathleen (who you can see in all of their maternity gloriousness that we had the pleasure of photographing here) were having a baby, we were totally excited for them, and thought it was just about the greatest thing ever! Baby Malachy was due to arrive right around the time of some of their weddings, and asked if we would be willing to step in for them and photograph Larissa & Gene’s wedding, one of their fantastic couples. We of course said yes, and after we had the chance to chat with them over the phone before their big day, we arrived to photograph them and all the goings on at the New Haven Lawn Club. We pretty much fell in love with both of them, their sense of style and their friends and family right away – Larissa is a stunner that has this vintage movie star quality about her, and Gene was the perfect compliment, suave and cool. We could definitely see why they were vowing to spend the rest of their days together as husband and wife. We had the opportunity to jaunt around the Lawn Club, as well at the Yale campus for some pretty sweet pictures of the two of them looking marvelous together, and then it was back for the ceremony and reception with beautiful floral arrangements and pops of peacock feathers from Candi’s Floral Creations. We especially loved Larissa & Gene’s table numbers, highlighting all of the live concerts they have experienced together (and we were a little jealous they got to see Sigur Ros, one of our favorite bands). We had the best time on their wedding day, and knowing we were able to help friends out at the same time, was a pretty win-win experience.

As we enter almost fully into the holiday season, we are reminded of the importance of friends and family and the ties we have to them, that strengthen through important milestones in our lives. Vicki and I moved to Connecticut a few years ago, and recently moved into a new house in our current town of Stratford. We have our usual spots we now shop in (hooray for the Nature’s Way Health Foods so close by!), and have discovered (through friends) the best place to get great Chinese that delivers on the nights we want to snuggle up together and watch a show we have DVR’d. Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love traveling all over this state, and those surrounding us, but there is something extra special and extra comforting about people that live close by. It helps us continue to discover the area we now call home, and makes us appreciate what we have even more. So when we met with Trae & Mike, and Trae’s parents, at our home studio for a consultation, we were delighted to hear that they live so close (Trae’s parents also live just up the road from us). We were even more thrilled to get to spend some QT with Trae and Mike just a quick drive away from us for their sweet engagement session. And it got even better when their wedding day came, with quick jaunts for both of us to their parent’s homes for pictures of Trae & Mike getting ready, followed by their beautiful ceremony, at Nichols United Methodist Church (which we could have walked to). Trae is a stunner on her own, and when she was all done up, and in her wedding gown, she not only took Mike’s breath away, but ours too. It was all a blur of emotion, laughter, and beautiful moments at the Waterview that left us fully appreciating the area we call home, and we can’t thank Trae and Mike enough for showing us a big portion of the magic that surrounds us on a daily basis.

Technology is an amazing thing that advances so rapidly, we never know what new breakthrough is right around the corner that will simplify all of our lives, or allow us to connect to one another in some new and exciting way. Technology allows us to digitally edit our photographs in the comfort of our own homes, and know if our exposures are spot on the moment we take an image in any kind of light. In the case of Heather & Ryan’s wedding at the Belle Mer, in Newport Rhode Island, technology allowed for Ryan’s mother to be a part of their day even if she was far away in a hospital bed, recovering from a car accident that happened days before. We all know and love Apple’s Ipad, and know that while it has so many amazing features that can be used in an infinite amount of ways, we didn’t think it could serve such an incredible purpose as to allow her to view, and participate in her son and daughter-in-law’s ceremony via Skype. So while the vows were being spoken aloud, she watched the whole thing live, and it was one of the coolest, most touching things we have had the opportunity of witnessing. And what an incredible day it was! Heather was absolutely radiant in her Maggie Sotero wedding gown, and her gorgeous flowers from Kim Lamothe (the flowers were grown from an organic garden). Ryan and his groomsmen looked super sharp in their light sand suits, and the colors of the day blended together in a perfect way that matched the colors of the setting sun during their portraits. We also want to give a shout out to the incredibly talented Heart Beat Dance Band (who we had the pleasure of working with two days in a row, what are the odds?), who fired up the whole reception, and left us humming all the way home.
